Why So Many Short Pieces? Grrrr!

Hardwood flooring is manufactured in different ways and each manufacturer is different. Common solid strip(2 1/4" x 3/4 width) or plank flooring (3 1/4" x 3/4  wide) manufactured in The US, Canada, and South America offer true random lengths typically ranging from 9 inches to 84" This is common with most prefinished and unfinished flooring. Imported products from the Far East such as China don't follow this rule very often. In most cases the maximum length is only 48 inches and the rest are set lengths, which sometimes creates an installation problem unless you know how to stagger properly.

Most engineered hardwoods are manufactured with maximum lengths in the 42 to 48" range. Below we have listed names of a few products manufactured similar to solid hardwoods in respect to overall lengths. Further below a small list of manufacturers offering much shorter lengths. There's always a downside and upside of shorter lengths with the two manufacturers shown. Although they may produce short lengths, quality is top drawer.

Back to the original topic; why so many short pieces? Much of it has to do with transportation and standard pallet sizes of 48" x 40"

(1) Depends on the width
