Nailing Hardwood Near Walls

An often asked question from do it yourselfers is how do we nail hardwood floors near walls where the flooring stapler/nailer cannot reach? The answer is you cannot use the flooring tool up to the last 3 or four rows if it's a 2 1/4" strip floor. Instead most professionals today use a pneumatic nailer with 15 gauge finish nails.

It's also best to save the straighter boards for this area. Depending on the manufacturer not all hardwood is created with a perfect world in mind. Some may have bows if you look down the edge of the boards. Common floor stapling/nailing tools straighten out mild bowed boards when the fastener is engaged. For more stubborn ones the rubber side of the mallet is used to persuade a tighter fit before fastening.

The same type of finish nailer can be used for starting the installation (picture shown above) along the longest wall.
