Hi everyone! First time poster here with an issue.
The company i work for is building an ash staircase and I'm part of the building crew. I have been awarded all the waist from the project wich could be enough would to do two staircases in my house. I have never installed a hardwood floor before but I don't think that will be a problem.

My issue is this. I have almost 200 peices that are almost 4 inches by 4 feet and I have plained it down to clean at 1/2 inch thick.

I was thinking of doing a half lap joint and I'm not sure if I just glue and brad it to the surface of the egsisting stairs (covered in with carpet right now) or because it's only 1/2 think material should i laminate it to 1/2 inch plywood. The second option sounds like a lot ore work and I would rather not do it.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Well I thought it was straight forward but I guess not if there is a complaint about my writing.

To make it simple: available stock is 4' X 4 1/2" and 1/2" thick. Also I have stock that i Can use for nosing.

I wanted to redo the stairs in my house with it. Will it work and what are my options.

The staircase is presently carpeted. Home is only 4 yrs old.

Thankyou for your patients.

Well, there's quite a bit of thinner hardwood (prefinished) that's installed on stairs nowadays, but they're tongue and groove. Keeping the pieces flat would probably be the biggest problem.

When I think of something less than perfect, distressed comes to mind. Full trowel spread adhesive while using screws could be an option with plugs/pegs. Maybe some decorative square pegs to make it look different? Why that came to mind I don't know, but I do recall a product I worked with that looked really cool on completion...with two square plugs on each end of a 5" plank. It also had a mildly scraped surface. It was prefinished.

Here's the product..

Wow!! That looks amazing! Square plug might be a bit much for me to do but I sure do like it. I think milling a half lap joint and with troweled glue and screwing would be easier.

1/2" thickness wind be a problem then?
