I have been pondering skipping the between coat abrasion. (water borne only)

I was wondering if I water popped the grain first with damp cloths and then abraded, would the floor pop a second time. I have read no but I was wondering if anyone has tried this.

My main reason for doing this is to skip, the process hauling my clarke machine back in to abrade after the second coat to remove the water pop. Also, I already cleaned the floors real well once. If the grain has already been popped then wouldn't it be easier to abrade the pop off before I start coating.

abrading between coats has two purposes . . . . (a) remove the bubbles & raised grain . . . in general, smoothing the surface so your next coat

lays well. (b) read the manufactures instructions for abrasion, it is important for a proper bond.

Popping grain & sanding before coating is no sure cure, . . . resanding after the "pop" is tricky . . . .it should be a used screen & fine.

Because you can be exposing new grain - - - not popped. Experiment and find "why & what" works for you.

Thanks Dan, after hauling sanders and edgers up and down stairs all week, I get a little tired of hauling out another machine, vacuum and pole sander.

The only reason I ever pop a floor is when I am doing a high solids stain , typically white or some other esoteric color . Other than that, popping the floor can be a waste of time . But getting back to your question, if you pop the floor, knock the grain back down and then coat, you'll still get some grain raise but less.

With all due respect, skipping steps can become very habit forming and I've seen quite a few people lose their reputation by going down that slippery slope. If you stick with the best techniques, your customers wont be sorry and you likewise wont be sorry.
