I am new to the forum. I have undertaken quite a project. I bought 5 7/8"x 13/16" rough sawn Chinqupin lumber and I and planing it to 3/4" and joining and ripping it to 5 1/2" Then tongue and grove. After I install it I am going to hand scrape it. My question is what is the best finish for this, water base, oil base how many coats. Also suggestions on which brand is tough and easy to work with, is there such a product. Thanks Delmont

Hello Delmont!
Looks like you are building something that will look unique and last long.
Oil based finish is easy to work with and 4 coats will last you for about 10 years maybe more.
If you want something fancy and hard - "Bona Traffic" water-based finish is for you. It is jus drying so quick that you would have to move very fast during application. One sealer and 2 coats would be enough.
But the hardest one is "Synteko" 2-component solvent-based floor finish. This one drying fast and smells very bad. You would need to use full-face respirator during the application and move even faster than with water-based.

So, maybe Oil Based would be the best solution for you?

Roman,

Thanks Roman, I am only doing 350 sqft. So how fast is very quickly  I would rather use the water base. I had a bad experience with a 2part sealer on my concrete countertop so I think I will stay away from that. Also I am doing 2 stair cases. Will I need to sand or buff between coats.

The Bona Traffic is 2 components water based finish. If you'd like to go with one component water based finish you can take Bona Mega or PallMan (Pall-96). Here is the link:
http://www.pallmann.us/products/product ... nish-1416/

You know, I don't buff between 1st and 2nd coat (trying to build up the finish layer over the wood), but after 2nd and before 3rd coat I always buff, vacuum and tack.

The bona traffic is two part, but its easy to use. I did my 1st floor floors with it, 1000 sq ft, and it was really easy to use. It was my first time refinishing floors too!

IF oil poly becomes an option check out LAST N LAST. Really nice stuff.
