Sorry if this is a newbie question, but here's what I'm considering:

Home has existing prefinished red oak in Kitchen and foyer. I do not like the color of this floor and want to have sanded and refinished. I also want to add hardwood to the great room which both the kitchen and foyer floors. So....
1. If I add job finished red oak, and have the whole works finished together will this look okay? The prefinished stuff has a noticeable bevel between planks.
2. A second option would be to add transitions at the entrances to the great room and do something completely different in the great room, i.e. wider planks, add a border etc.

I'm also open to other options if you've run into this in the past. Thanks.

Mike

With the bevel between the boards, I would assume that your existing is a nail or glue down application. This should be able to be added onto, and then finished on site. Sanding the bevels out of a floor should be possible. The contractor needs to confirm that the bevels are not too deep to make this impossible, or that the floor you are adding on to is not an engineered floor that does not have enough material at the bevel to resand (I have seen some).

I would fins someone who is capable of doing this rather than using transitions. There will be a higher than normal sanding charge for the bevels but as long as the material is suitable it is not a problem.

Thanks for the response. I'm 99% sure that the existing stuff is solid 3/4" nail down red oak.
