We've recently had our clear oak floors refinished and I've just completed the installation of some new baseboards. I was wondering if it's ok to caulk the bottom of the baseboard where it meets the floor? I don't want to ruin the look of the new baseboards by using a shoe moulding but I would like to fill the small gaps (1/16") where the floor dipped a little. I would of course tape the floor and apply water base caulk using a putty knife to keep it neat.

Thanks

Are you using true caulking? What I mean is . . . are you dispensing it from a tube in a caulking gun? If so, then after using blue tape on the floor (and on the baseboard, too if you want), put the appropriate size bead on. Then, keep a cup of water beside you, dip your finger into the water and use your finger to wipe the caulking. If you pick up too much caulking with your finger, stop and wipe it off with a clean towel/rag, then proceed with your wet finger again. It really will give you a nice finished look on the caulking. (I wouldn't use a putty knife or any other tool, either.)
Finally, pull your tape after about 10 minutes which is enough time for the caulking to set up.
If you do it right, you'll more than likely receive the "Fickled Finger Fate" Award.
