As you all know, we've been having a heck of a time with this install of spotted gum.

The contractor belt sanded at an angle, then he hard plated with 80, then multi disk with 60 and then 80, then screen at 150. We could not see any chatter marks remaining, floor looked flat when it was wet down, etc.

First coat of finish went on really well. No problems.
Second coat was applied this morning and we either have chatter marks back or we are getting an interesting pattern from the roller which if measured, the pattern that looks like chatter is about a 1/2 turn of the roller.

Has anybody ever had problems rolling on Syteko or Precision swedish finsh and had roller marks - looks like chatter but it also looks like like a heavy sheen then lower sheen, every 1/2 turn, or the finish absorbed more every 1/2 roller turn - or there was heavier amount of material on 1/2 of the roller.

It is interesting that in the center of the 24x24 foot floor where the guy overlapped the finish(by about 1ft), there is absolutely no marks. Also there is no marks along the walls where he made the first stroke across the grain.

Tommorrow is scheduled to be the final coat and it's either going to get worst or better (the center of the floor gives me hope like a girl friend that you like but treats you rotten).

Part of me wonders if we should do a coat across grain, then the final coat with the grain but may be to risky???

Is a roller a good choice for this? (Precision swedish, matte).

Does this sound familiar to anybody? Any thoughts (the floor that is, not the girl)?

Thanks.

OK, Here is the latest... We're finished. And very happy.

After noticing yesterday that the overlap areas did not contain the "chatter-like" pattern, I asked the floor guy to buy a new roller frame.

He showed up this morning with a new frame and put the final coat on the floor.

The floor looks absolutely flat and the finish went on near perfectly.

After all of this, I believe the chatter-like pattern on the last go around was coming from a bent roller frame. Every time the roller rolled, it put more pressure on every 1/2 turn and less pressure every 1/2 turn resulting in heavier and lighter finish that looked like chatter.

After we were finished the floor guy goes outside SLAMS the roller frame against the bucket rim in order to make the roller cover fly off without touching it. I pointed out to him that this was how his roller was getting bent. He said he'd just buy a new one if it got bent again. Duh?

THANKS to everybody here for their input and support on this project. The input that I received on this board was invaluable to use in approaching and working with the contractor on this project. Several times I shared with them what was discussed here, and they were a good sport and tried it - and it worked.

We started the week before Thanksgiving and finished today. About 3 1/2 months of pain, but patience has paid off.

And I really can't say enough good things about Wolfgang and Stacie at SVS Hardwood in Orlando. Their paitience with the work, with new suggestions and with me was outstanding.

In order to achieve what the competition cannot grasp, we must complete what they will not attempt. Nobody ever said it would be easy, but it's darn sure worth it.
