I assume you would like a stain or natural finish on your cabinets. Solid wood or plywood can be used. The interiors will be just as important for ease of cleaning and durability. There are pre-finished plywood panels that will hold up great. Visit a wood store and talk to a salesman. They know what the cabinet shops use.

What type of cabinets? Kitchen? Are you going to build these yourself? What décor are you trying to match? Will these need doors? Cabinet grade plywoods are available. Try to buy from a lumber yard rather than a big box....lumber yards will have better quality stuff. Some will build the cabinets and buy the doors.....doors take more time to build and require more tools and skill. As Pete said, the prefinished stuff will save finishing time.

Wood cabinets are appealing because of their distinct and unique character.

Some prefer the predictability of engineered materials like thermofoil and laminate but if you want a natural look, nothing compares to the beautiful color variations and grain patterns found in real wood.

You can select cabinets on the basis of characteristics,

Availability, style, and finishes.
