Hi.

Just took up our family room carpet and pad (500 sq. ft), and noticed a raised area in the middle of the room (about 3/4" at the peak.) There are a few cracks radiating from the peak in multiple directions, and the raised area is about 1.5 feet wide by 8 feet long. Almost like something is pushing up from under there?

Anyhow, I took an angle grinder to it to try and get it down to "spec" (the flooring needs 3/16" max over 8'). A lot of work though (probably took less than a 1/4" off in an hour.) But now I'm thinking is this the best way to go? Should I jack up that part and pour it? Or is grinding and using self leveling around it the way to go?

The boards will also lay in the hump's long direction, so in reality, there isn't a large difference in level as the boards go up and over.

Thanks for any advice!

Daveoman, I see that alot where the cracks radiating out from a peak. Those cracks are shrinkage cracks due to too much water in the mix and it always seems to be at the intersection of the cracks. Just poor screeding of the concrete at pour time.

I use a 7" diamond cup grinder attached to my vac system. You can usually rent one at Home Depot or some other tool rental place. They are very aggressive.
Or you can call a concrete coring grinding company. I use one when the area is too large.
Sometimes I will chip it out with my Bosch demo hammer and a pointed chisel to get off the meat of it then if I need to patch it up a bit.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help! I've got a 4" angle grinder that I'm going to town with this weekend. Hopefully it doesn't take forever!

You would be better equiped to use a jackhammer to start, then a grinder.
