Hi all,

new to the forum, new to DIY hardwood flooring, and hoping for some insight. :)

In my recently bought home in NorCal (1920s), I have ripped out carpet in the upstairs bed room and found Douglas Fir hardwood underneath. Unfortunately the hardwood is only covering two thirds of the room, the other third is an extension and had a plywood covered sub floor to bring it to level with the old hardwood. I believe the original hardwood is from the 50-60, but it may be older.

I sanded the original hardwood and installed new sub flooring in the extension so I can lay down new hardwood level with the existing, sanded hardwood. I do have a source for Douglas Fir with similar grit to the existing hardwood, but there is some difference in color because of age I assume. So far so good.

It would be great to have those two hardwoods seamlessly next to each other, but I understand this might not be possible due to the age difference and discoloration. Nevertheless I want to try and match as best as I can, while maintaining the natural appearance. I should also mention that the room has lots of sun, especially in the extension.

The question is what kind of finish should I use for this job and what should I be aware of while applying the finish? Additional info and insights would be very appreciated.
