What do I do?

Hired a "professional" to refinish my red oak floors that were under the carpet in the house I just bought. It looks horrible.

He sanded the floor and filled some of the nail holes from the tackstrips and sealed it the 1st day. I noticed alot of "junk" in the finish (dust, hair etc.) as well as swirl marks (looks like from a disk sander) around some of the edges. I brought that to his attention and he said that would come out with when he sanded the floor before finishing with an OMP.

Well... The floor is now "finshed" and all the "junk" is still there. I called him and he said he'd "fix" it over the weekend.

1st Question. How to correct it? Screen and recoat? Sand off the finish and start over? What would that cost?

2nd Question. What do I do with the guy who did the job? It was about 600 square feet and he wants $900.

Any advice?

Without seeing it, It's hard to say how to fix it. Debri in the finish can often times be sanded/scraped out and the floor buffed and recoated. You said he was a professional but only charging a $1.50 a foot for all that work seems cheap to me. Here in N. CA. the cost would have been two to three times that amount. Anyway, if he said he'd come back and fix it, let him.

Gary hit the nail on the head with this one, in my opinion.

Cheapest bidder job.

I don't think screening and re-coating will service this complaint. I'm thinking a "do-over" may be needed.

honestly, this is what the term "you get what you pay for" means.

1.50 a foot? thats well under 50% of what most "Professionals" would charge.

I wouoldnt touch it for less than 3.25, but then again I dont leave edger marks, or bugs in the finish LOL

Like it was stated, these things may not buff out, the debris in the finish should, but those edger marks, they require sanding, maybe he plans on taping off individual boards to fix it.

Best of luck to you, please remeber this when you decide to do your next project, Before you pick the lowest bidder. tell your friend this too. :)

Ya, they got exactly what they paid for!!!

Did you happen to get his Cali contractor license, number and verify it????
@ $1.50 a foot, there is no way he is running legal in California.
