Im installing molding on a finished Hardwood floor. My question is... the existing base board molding was installed between the floor and the drywall. I found this out when removing the quarter round. Is this correct? or poor installation? I always thought you were supposed to leave a 3/4-1/2" gap. Measuring from drywall to floor is about 7/8" to 1" gap.

The project I am working on is installing new base molding which is 3/4" thick, Do I attempt to put the molding in the gap or add some sort of shim to the bottom of the wall and then put the molding on top of floor and replace the quarter round?

The hardwood installers were lazy or doing it on the cheap. Ideally, you want to remove baseboard, before you install a floor, and then reinstall it after. Do whatever you think looks best, but yes there is supposed to be a gap.

The contract for the installation for the wood flooring, didn't include base board removal. They installed the wood flooring with the baseboards attached to the wall. They left their gap and covered it with ¼ round.

You are at their mercy. I would install the base at the height as if were sitting on the flooring and then nail on some ¼ round.

Im not a professional, just a DIYer, but since Im installing a molding much like this: http://houseoffara.com/products/wainscot-base-moulding/all/W375MDF then doing beadboard on the walls; You suggest i put the molding on the subfloor rather than on the hardwood finished floor? Thanks

No, I said flooring height.

Not down on the subfloor.
