Good morning. I recently removed the carpeting from the entire second floor of my 1932 home. The wood is in excellent condition and shows no evidence of ever having been finished in any way. My guess is that it was always covered by carpet (no adhesive in the pad, either).

Now that the carpet is gone, I want to finish the floors. Do you think I need to have the floors sanded before being finished? I have the idea that the floors could have been finished when the house was built, but the owner opted for carpeting. This is all new to us, so any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If the floors currently have old urethane on them, re coating is probably a 50/50 solution. It might be feasible and it might not .If they have been cleaned with wax or oil soaps, a new coat of urethane will not stick properly and quickly begin to delaminate. And cleaning off waxes or oil soaps isn't a process that is 100% certain to work either.

Completely sanding and re finishing will certainly work .
