My girlfriend and I have decided we'd like our floors to be a little darker than natural red oak. My brother tells me floors that have been coated in OMU do not stain well. Something about even if the OMU is sanded off, there will be spots that don't take the stain? He thinks he is Einstein, but I'd rather have a professional opinion than his.

1) Can it be stained or does it take stain well?
2) If we are going to use an oil based poly, what kind of stain should be used?

Thanks again.

If you sand the floors down to the raw wood where no finish exists, then you can stain the floors.

Does red oak tend to stain well if sanded by a professional? Or is the wood too hard to take it?

It is the most widely used wood flooring in the world. It stains very well. Your idea of hiring a professional is wise.
