Hi all,

Wonder if anyone can give me an idea of pricing per sq foot for Genuine Mahogany [swietenia macrophylla] tongue and groove flooring size about 5" wide x 3/4" thick.

I realize it's going to vary a bit in price depending on grade - looking for higher grade stuff - I'm having problems getting some approximate prices.

Any help very much appreciated.

Try Dan Cosgrove at https://www.brazilianhardwood.com. If it's really available he would know.

If not, I have a stained walnut that serves the need.

Cheers for the link I'll contact Dan - actually I've found it's readily available at a few lumber dealers it's just not stocked as flooring at retailers. They tend to stock lower quality cheaper copy mahogany like 'Santos Mahogany' which is about as mahogany as my big toe :-)

Santos has the characteristics like genuine mahogany but is practically twice as hard which will hold up better as flooring in the long run.

Santos is Meranti a lower quality wood which can twist, shrink and does not have the longevity of genuine Mahogany. Depends on what type of quality, look and feel you are after at the end of the day.

Santos mahogany is denser, harder and stronger than Genuine Mahogany.
The janka value for hardness for Santos is 2,400 vs. Genuine 900.
This is one reason that it is used for flooring. Walnut is harder than Genuine Mahogany.
