I installed half my 3/4 solid maple hardwood flooring in my hallway. In my quest to get the best installation i glued the tongues with wood glue and nailed it down with cleat nails. Im now begining to worry about this being that i only recall reading to do this once. I know you are not supposed to nail and glue solid hardwood. I installed the floor over 5/8 plywood with 2 by 10 joists. I have left 1/2 inch of expansion room by the walls. My concern is what problems may occure from this. I know wood floors expand and contract with humidity changes but i believe wood glue is designed to expand and contract along with the wood.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated, theres no option now other than to remove the wood and re-start which would most likly mean loosing most of the boards.

What you have done, is called sidebonding. It is not a good thing. Maple is a mover, meaning it shrinks and swells at a greater rate then other wood. By sidebonding the boards together, the glue is going to be stronger then the grain. So now come winter time when the heat gets turned on and the interior of the home gets really dry from the heat, the wood is going to shrink, when it shrinks, instead of opening gaps between the boards, it will now rip the edge of the upper groove to some extent.

i was really down yesterday after i realized i should not have done that. I wanted to get the most solid and quiet floor possible, and i assumed wood glue was designed to expand and contract with the wood.

I assum if i keep the humidity around what it is now it shoud minimize the ammount of board shrinkage or movement, and minimize possible problems.

also do you feel the tonges will break off the boards when they shrink or maybe just the glue bond tear.

I believe you may get alot of noise(crackling, popping) once the Rh changes or seasonal change if a carpenters type glue was used. Boards will want to shrink and along with that will be seperation from the glue bond.

my big worry is that the boards will crack on the finished side when they try to contract, and have now where to go.somethings got to give.

Yes, that floor will be noisy.
