We have an old California Craftsman cottage and most of the downstairs has a glued down pine floor with boards that apparently are supposed to be for panelling, not flooring. They have aged to a very golden orange color and we hate them. The grooves are so big that all kinds of stuff gets trapped there (eeuw) and because of their design we can't sand them down and refinish them. Also it is not completely level - some places the wood is lower than others, like the bathroom, and in other places the piece of wood that leads from one place to the other is slightly higher -whole thing a nightmare.
How big a job is getting up an old floor that was glued to the concrete slab?
If we put a floating pergo floor on top of it, how would we bring up the level of the one carpeted room in the house to match it?
Will this be a giant, nightmarish job?
ANy help gratefully received

Hard to imagine what you have glued to the floor.
You cannot sand it, so it must be engineered with paper thin top ply.
Gapped severely.
Glued down.
different levels.

Is your sub-floor at different levels?
is this a concrete sub-floor or wood sub-floor?

Any tear out job is hard work. I think I would have a professional look at the situation..........

Hard to say how hard of job it will be to remove it. But remove it you must. You cannot go over. Suggestion; If it's manpower you need, hire some temp laborers from a temp agency. They handle all the taxes and insurance requirements. You pay an hourly rate, usually about $20.00 per hour per man with a 4 hour minimum. Two guys in 4 hours can rip up a lot of wood and through it in a dumpster and it would cost less than $200.00. Get yourself some 4' crowbars and cut the flooring across the length every 2', just barely touching the slab. Then have them pry the boards up.

Hey Gary,
Do you know where Davis, California is located?

Temporary help would vary in cost depending on where you are, but Gary is either correct in his statement or Very Close.

I still have more questions than answers !!

Long Story SHort:
Mother - In - Law needs help.
So, we may be moving back to California to take care of her.
She lives in Central Davis.
It may be nice returning since I spent 45 years of my life there, but I'll miss Florida if this comes to pass.
The True Blue Sky and year round green here in Florida compared to what I remember as "Brownish colored sky and 3 months of green".
Then there is the Traffic in California.... oh boy !!

As a youth, I lived in Pleasant Hill and Brentwood, near Antioch..
