Guys, I have to put one of these in for a customer and never have done it before.;

How do you trim your carpet ? Exactly to where the transition strip begins / Ends ? In the middle ?

I'm wondering if you trim it a little short and then use a kicker to stretch it into place ? Thanks for your help

Paul, have to laugh at that picture, were did you get it? First off it is position to far in the doorway. It should be placed in the middle of the door stop, you know where to door stops so you don't see it sticking out in the hall. lol

So basically after cutting it, positioning it correctly and screwing it down or using ringshank nails. You bump it up with a knee kicker (unless you have a power stretcher) so the backing hooks on the pins. Then usually with a stair tool it is lightly tucked or creased into the gap provided by the metal lip that will be exposed. Then with a razor knife of your choice run it along the top edge of the metal lip cutting off the excess carpet. After that tuck it all the way under the metal lip and pound down with a rubber mallet.

There is another on called a z-bar in which the metal bar is not exposed. But thats a couple more paragraphs.

Hope that helps.

It does help.Thanks Stephen .I used that picture(random google image search) just to show what type of transition I have to use . there's very little in the way of videos on how to use these pieces on youtube or the internet but my friend (who I am doing the job for ) got a kicker for the task.

Determine whether you have the proper transition strip for the flooring that meets your carpet. Transition strips are designed to level different materials; the packaging will tell you whether the strip is designed to be used for carpet to carpet, carpet to hardwood, carpet to vinyl or carpet to ceramic.
Measure the doorway or other area where you plan to install the transition strip. Make sure your measurement is straight across, as this will be your cutting length.
