Hi all,

First post, please be gentle.

I'm building a new house in IL and I want to put 3/4 solid floors down on about 2000 sqft. I'm a fan of the look and hardness of both Jatoba and Hickory. Now I'm trying to locate a supplier for it, and I'd like to stay local. Trouble is, there's really only one non-box-store wood supplier in town. They can get me 4" unfinished Hickory for about $4 a square foot. That price matches up with a quote I got from Baird Brother's in Ohio.

In searching for other places to get a Hickory quote, I came across Hurst Hardwoods Their price for the same sizes is almost $0.70/sqft cheaper than the local guys, shipping included. Jatoba is discounted even more. Has anyone ever heard anything about them, good or bad?

Thanks,
Don

u need to make sure the grading is the same,widths....etc....

u will also need to get it in the house..stacked...
this internet wont have the same expenses that your local distributor has, and lastly,
you are not a flooring contractor, so wouldn't get the same pricing as one would.

I would check the reputation of Hurst online and call to make sure you are comparing apple to apple regarding grade, length, width, finishing, etc. If the answer is satisfactory and you can save $.70/sqft to your door, why not go ahead order it especially no other supplier available in your area.

Nothing on the negative side with Hurst that I've heard, but they do deal heavily in cabin grade type material. Something to inquire about.

So make sure you are not getting cabin grade which usually has no warranty and hige % of waste. Good luck with your flooring project.
