We are remodeling our kitchen and simply trying to determine if we should attempt to match existing hardwood floors on the main level (Red Oak) with the new kitchen floor or install a lighter gray looking wood and use a gray transition into the red oak. I have been unsuccessful trying to find any transition images from gray wood to red oak so appreciate any insight or experience.

Red oak will have a red or orange cast to it even through most stains. White oak has the same grain pattern, but will take a gray stain without the reddish cast. It is a little harder than red oak, also, so will hold up to dropped utensils better.

I think that when you can do the same flooring in all areas, it will look better as it will make your space look larger and more cohesive. Also, if you have same species, you'll have ability to refinish the whole area later a different color and the stain color should be consistent.

While I love gray floors, gray is also more challenging to decorate with and also it doesn't always go so well with adjoining wood floors (unless there is a big contrast and cool tones such as dark - e.g. dark walnut, jacobean, ebony).

Re: transitions, that shouldn't be a problem. Just buy matching transitions made of the same wood. I'd be more worried about the colors working well together.

Go for matching your floor as it gives great appeal to the home. Your another idea was right but as far as I concern go for your first option.
