Hi all... newbie to your forum. Great site here with lots of info. I have a question regarding random width flooring. We were fortunate enough to find some beautiful eastern white pine flooring at a local lumber mill in 3–4-5 inch widths. We needed about 1450 sq ft so this deal was just right. The square footage on each as follows (I also tried to figure out lineal footage) hope I got it right:

3 inch - 604 sq ft (2416 lf)
4 inch - 576 sq ft (1728 lf)
5 inch - 425 sq ft (1018 Lf)

My problem is figuring out a pattern. I’m not sure how to do it. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks a bunch everyone!!!!

Random Width Plank Formula - near the page bottom. You'll have figure the pattern with the math. You don't have enough 5" to do a standard 3,4, 5" pattern. Maybe 3,4,3,4,5. My guess.

I figure the pattern by finding how many lineal feet of each width, then develop a pattern that will use up the widths proportionally.
If you divide your footage by 500 you will get a ratio close to using 5 rows of 3" to 3 rows of 4" and two rows of 5". Place the rows so you will use up all of the rows in the ratio of 5:4:2 after you lay eleven rows and when you get close to finishing you can adjust the pattern to use everything that you can. When you are coming close to a wall, you need to end at the wall with a wide plank instead of a narrow rip.
