Hello all,

I have a house built in 1980 that has only 3/4" particle board subfloor. Sanity checking my plan.

The joists run EW, subfloor 4x8 sheets run NS.

I plan to:

1. Remove the PB and replace with 3/4 x 4 x 8 Tongue-and-Groove Plywood Sturd-I-Floor panels.
2. Lay down felt or underlayment paper,
3. Then the new hardwood would run NS across the subfloor and the EW joists.

Sound correct?

Pics - I was surprised that I had ONLY the 3/4" PB subfloor!

Thanks!

OK - I just re-read the sticky and noticed something I missed earlier:

Quote:
There are other, older and not used anymore subfloor systems one may encounter. Such as: 1&1/8" T&G plywood subfloor installed at 90 deg to 4x6 beams spaced 4' oc.
1&1/2" x 5" T&G solid fir deck boards installed at 90 deg. to 4 x6 beams spaced 4' oc.
1x8 solid fir/pine boards installed at 90 deg to joists spaced 16" oc
1" RED-X T&G particle board subfloor installed at 90 deg to joists spaced 2' oc.
3/4" or 5/8" particle board found mostly today in modular and mobile homes.
These subfloors should NOT be removed but overlayed with 1/2" CDX plywood that is well stapled (2" around perimeter and 6" oc.) or glued or screwed. In all cases, subfloors and underlayments are to be flat to within 3/16" in a 10' radius.

So Am I better off just installing the 1/2" CDX over the existing PB?

Update: Because I see conflicting information all over the net regarding particleboard subfloor removal, I decided to speak to the manufacturer.

They said ABSOLUTELY DO NOT put 1/2" CDX over particle board subfloor and that it must be removed. I know this conflicts with Gary's info in the sticky.

I believe that was specifically about prefab modular/mobile homes because the exterior walls are built on top of it and could cause a structural problem.
