Hi,

I live in Mass and currently have carpet over concrete. I have 2 living areas, one which is 60% below ground level.

I am looking to put in hardwood floors but not sure what to put in; engineered vs solid. I'm leaning towards engineered but was not sure based on where I live and with one level below ground level.

Also, I'm looking to get a hard colour - something in this colour: http://www.builddirect.com/Porcelain-Tile/ceramic_tiles_northwest-Brandywine/Additional_6933_0_10018792_1933_0.aspx

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I would definetely stick with engineered below grade, for it's structural stability. For gluedown installation I would use Mapei Planniseal or Bostik MVP over the substrate. For floating...6 or 8 mil poly.

Thanks.

For my scenario, which is better? Glue down or float?

I am thinking of getting it in about 4 or 5 inches wide width.

Any additional thoughts?

Thanks again.

Overall hardness won't keep away the scratches and dings if that's what you're seeking. If that's a concern try a hardwood with more grain or character. Finish sheen makes a difference too. Avoid high gloss.

Oaks and Ash are a few.

Professional install? Either

DIY install? Floater

Incidentally if you're in Mass. Hosking Hardwood does local installations...internet pricing too

Thanks.

I was going to have it professionally done so didn't know which installation method was better for a concrete floor.

Perform moisture tests first. If it's really high just float it or do a floating subfloor and fasten it if there isin't any issue with the height of the floated subfloor.
