Hi all,

We are about to begin the process of installing Brazilian Chestnut floors throughout our home. Currently we have 2 1/2" wide Oak and are going for a more modern look with 5" Braz Chestnut.

The problem is that we have a circular staircase. All of the Oak was custom cut for these stairs and a few contractors have said that the cost to redo them in the Braz Chestnut would be more than the entire flooring we are doing!

So my only option now is to sand and stain them to match the BC. I would like to ask all of the experts here if you think this is a decent option? Will the stained Oak blend in okay with the BC??

Thanks in advance

I don't think it's practical to replace the staircase - too costly. I agree, I would try to stain it similar color.

For what it's worth, very often, the steps are a different species and/or grade of wood. For example, in our area of the country (northeast), you will often find oak floors and pine steps.

Also, if you the color/graining difference bothers you, I would recommend adding a carpet runner on the steps. In fact, I would recommend that regardless from a safety and design perspective.

You might find this article on carpet runners helpful.
