I have a 2 bedroom ranch that has had commercial grade carpet glued down to the original oak hardwood floors. I have removed the carpet, but of course the glue remains. Is there a way to remove the glue without sanding? Or is sanding the only way to go? It seems like the sanding would "gum-up" the sand paper. Or would that be a problem? I have sanded floors before with good results, but I just thought there might be a better way to go this time. It there a solvent on the market that will breakdown the glue so that it can be removed with a putty knife? Let me know the best way to tackle this problem.

Duct tape the soles of your shoes, so you can peel the tape off and not track the glue all over your house.

Bags of sand. Spread out in the path of the sander. The glue balls up with the sand as a media. Remove the balled up sand and reapply more sand. Sand until iy is all gone. Then start your sanding sequence to cut the floor for new finish.

Any chemical you use, will give you fits when you try to apply finish to the wood.

sanding is the only way, kitty litter works as well. Be prepared for a through cleaning of the machine when done.
