Looking for opinions, if you're able to tell what is just happening from this image. And, is this normal, if happening in multiple boards throughout house. Photo taken Feb 2017.

Looks like what we term over wood. Common with lower priced products. It's also why most manufacturers have slightly larger micro bevels. It helps to conceal milling irregularities.

I agree with Ken. All manufacturers have their own tolerance for over wood especially square edge prefinished. I have even seen it on Kährs and they are the best!.

Question though - was this like that immediately after or during the install?

This was new construction in 2015. Solid hardwood, sanded and finished in place. Single story, over crawlspace. No vapor barrier on ground. Installed before hvac running in June, finished in July. Floor looked fine in Aug 2015. Started to notice a few issue about June of 2016, and now many in Feb 2017. Floor also makes unusual sound when you walk across many places, when you are taking your foot off the floor - not squeaking.. the board sticking to, and then pulling away from the felt? (or whatever it is) No real admission of a problem coming from builder, although he says he has a couple of approaches that he will discuss...
