Hi,
I’m building a my new home in Tennessee and have just found plenty of beautiful solid wood white oak flooring. It is tongue and groove but not on the ends of the boards. What about butt joints? How should this be installed? Do butt joints cause problems? What are my options if I select this flooring?

Thanks.

Butt-jionts need to be fastened within 2-3 inches from the ends. If you have a good sub-floor and use narrow boards you will not need to have the ends matched. Wider planks can get out of alignment.

Butt joints are a potential squeak point. You could tongue and grove them yourself. A router with a slot cutting bit will do the job...put a slot on each end and glue a spline/slip tongue into one of the slots. You could also cut a tongue onto the end of one of the boards.....I think this is more work than 2 slots and a spline/slip tongue.
