Well my wife got me in the trouble with stairs after we installed hardwood floor. She decided to remove carpet from the stairs and replace with wood. After I took the carpet apart I discovered that steps are mortise to the skirt and there is no way to remove them. I figure I have two options

1) Put plank on top stairs and raisers and plywood on the landing (consist of 3 huge triangles). But then my first step drum is 12” diameter and I could only find 10” diameter firs step. It makes 2” inch gap in the floor I can’t covered. I considered use the existing one but it is rather damaged. I would use strips on the floors, planks and plywood on the stairs…………..kind of messy I think

2) Continue with strip floors all the way on the stairs and remove first step I would replace it with custom made (by me) square instead round on the side and covered it with floor strips as well……….clean same material all the way.

Here is my dilemma which solution is cleaner from the esthetic point of you? I have not seen the first one. I have never done any of it.

Even the simplest stair cases are difficult to do. Your's sounds even trickier. If you are not a carpenter or experienced woodworker, I recommend hiring a pro. Believe me, you will be better off. Work some over time at your job to pay for it. I don't do my own electrical because I'm not a pro. I'll just work a little extra to hire a pro. Now I see you're in Chicago and we've seen a lot of complaints about some pros in Chicago so research your installer carefully. Check them out thoroughly and get referals and see their work.

Thank you Gary. Now thats sounds like a good idea...hahahah. I am rather experienced woodworker so I might try to tackle that task. I will let you know how that turned out.
