Having read through this thread I didn't see where anyone discussed recommended length or gauge of staple or cleat for various types of flooring installs and the reasons why.
I am planning to install 3/4 hardwood over 3/4 CDX plywood (23/32") subfloor. What is the best recommended gauge and length cleat (not using staples) for this installation and why?
I'd prefer to not have the cleats penetrate through the underside of the plywood. Would I be giving up holding power using a shorter cleat? I know it is recommended to use shorter cleats when nailing into plywood installed over a concrete slab so as not to penetrate the moisture barrier under the plywood. If holding power is an issue with shorter cleats, wouldn't it be here as well. I haven't found anything that explains this.
